Late last year, some news regarding Johnny Depp was shared regarding how he may have “boiled his brain”. After showing up for various appearances looking thinner than what we’ve come to expect to see in Johnny Depp, there was rampant speculation that he was ill. The reasoning behind Johnny Depp’s thin figure has been attributed to one thing – his sauna.
For the most recent installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Depp’s been rehearsing his lines in his steam room. At a fan event in fall 2018, Johnny Depp shared, “Captain Jack was actually born in a sauna—my sauna. I figured this is a guy who has been on the high seas for probably all of his life, the majority of his life at least, and therefore probably dealt with a lot of inescapable heat to the brain.”
After it was found out Johnny Depp enjoyed spending long hours in a sauna, rumours began to circulate assuming he had been caused brain damage. Stoking these rumours, it was shared Depp had turned up the sauna heat to meet a maximum temperature of 1,000 degrees.
Continuing to speak on his use of his steam room, Depp said, “I sat in there for as long as I could until it started to affect me mentally. Which is to say, it was very, very hot, as was my brain. Then what happened is while I was in there, in that kind of heat you cannot stand still, but the worst of it is if you move, it kills you. So that in itself sort of gave me… yeah, like his brain has been part-boiled to some degree.”
There’s a lot to unpack here about how saunas and steam rooms can be used, as well as the impact this could have had on Johnny Depp’s brain. As with anything in the exercise or health field, too much of a good thing can end up being a bad thing. If you spend hour after hour in saunas or steam rooms, it can lead to extreme dehydration and a myriad of conditions. Consecutive hours can also lead to dangerously low blood pressure and, in some cases, sudden death.
If you’re worried about your next sauna or steam room session, don’t be. To achieve these sort of negative effects, one would have to almost make it a targeted goal. There would have to be hours on end spent consecutively in a sauna. Also, can it boil your brain – highly, highly unlikely. Johnny Depp appears perfectly fine post-sauna and post-steam, which makes this type of accusation or assumption ridiculously untrue.
If you’re in a sauna or steam room and the warning signs begin to set in, get out of there. Dehydration and low blood pressure can have serious consequences, in the wrong person or at the wrong time.
