Naturally, a person might think walking into a sauna that they’re going in there to sweat and nothing more. Of course you don’t need to be bringing in a bottle of water into a sauna – at least, that’s one way to think. Why would you want to hydrate when you’re going in to sweat – well, here’s why.
When you’re sweating, it’s easy to dehydrate. No one is going into a sauna to completely dehydrate themselves. In fact, when you do that, it could have very negative consequences on your body. Before, during, and after, you want to be sipping on water and keeping healthy. Drinking water’s not going to negatively impact your sauna time. In fact, drinking water and staying hydrated will help you sweat more and lose weight.
Analyzing our body composition, our muscles contain 75 percent water, our brain is 76 percent water, our lungs are 90 percent water, and our bones are made from 25 percent. It is imperative water’s in our systems at all times to keep these parts of our bodies functioning, among other aspects of our health. For example, our bodies transport nutrients to various areas through our blood and our blood is made up of more than 82 percent water. This all means you should be sipping on water throughout your sauna adventures.
You don’t need to be drinking boring water, either. There are plenty of enticing ways to spruce water up. For something simple, consider adding a slice of fresh finger or something citrus. Fruits like lemons, limes, or oranges are great to help mix things up a bit. You can also mix in some raspberries, strawberries, or similar berries to give your water some added taste. Fruits like pineapples also work.
Water is a key ingredient in detoxification. As you sweat in a sauna, toxins are released from the body through its pores. You need to replace what you lose. Do this with fresh water. This will subsequently keep your organs replenished with hydration which assists your body’s internal detoxification processes. Another recommendation is when you drink your water, do it at room temperature whenever possible although cold water’s fine as well.
Passing out in an infrared sauna is embarrassing and dangerous. Staying hydrated is smart and necessary. Drink water before you get in and don’t hesitate to bring a large bottle inside. If you feel thirsty getting out of the sauna, that’s a sign you haven’t drank enough water before and during. Keep in mind that if you feel lightheaded at any point in the sauna or if you begin to not feel well, remove yourself from the sauna and go have a cup of water. Oftentimes, it’s dehydration.
